Music in Our Lives

“There is music in the sighing of the reed;

There is music in the gushing of the rill;

There is music in all things, if men had ears;

The earth is but an echo of spheres.”

- Lord Byron

Earth has denizens of a countless number – the fowls, the fishes, the beast, and man. On the evolutionary ladder, Man is said to be on the top. Man as such is attributed with the capacity to think, understand, analyze, and assimilate pleasure and benefit for his own. Man has traveled far and invented creations for his benefit; Music is the crowning glory of all of man’s inventions.

The origin of music is still shrouded with mystery, many scholars had tried to search for the clue and proposed theories of how it became, but neither of these theories can say for sure of how it began. Although knowing its origin is important, it is equally important to know how music evolves and transforms into the music of today and how it became part of our daily living.

Music is born along with every civilization, every race, and every country. Music tells the story of each civilization’s struggles, voyages, and adventures.

There is the music of the pharaohs of Egypt, the songs of praise offered by the Egyptians to Isis and Horus, the songs of pounding every brick of rock during the construction of the great pyramids.

There is the music of the Indians, the chanting of mantras for god Krishna, the music and dancing for the god Shiva, the hymns of praise for all the bodhisattvas. And there came, “Jai Ho” of the famous film “Slum Dog Millionaire”.

There is music in Greece, the song sacred to the gods of Olympus, the song of the voyages of Hercules, and the band music of parades during Olympics.

And there are music of the geniuses Beethoven and Mozart of the great classical times; the immortal hits of ABBA, The Beatles, The Carpenters, and many other early bands; the hits of the all time favorites Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, and other industrious singers; or the latest breed of singers like Beyonce, Britney, David Cook, Jonas Brothers, Taylor Swift and their chart topping hits.

Indeed, music is evolving with civilization. Music is there in every period of mans struggle; music, in fact, encompasses all of man’s experiences, and embraces every man’s feeling and emotions.

Music is man’s best friend, every man’s companion, and man’s expression. There is music for every occasion, for every success, for failures, for happiness, for loneliness, for falling in love, for revenge, for relaxation, for dreams, for fantasy, for birthdays, for marriage, for god, for sadness, for death, and generally for everything.

Man always finds comfort in music, inspiration, advice, and sympathy. We turn to music to express our feelings, to convey our message, to be entertained, to boast our exploits, to relax our minds, to heal maladies, and to tell our stories. Music has become an indispensable tool for man’s existence and happiness, aside from the fact that music is also a big business industry earning billions yearly.

Indeed music touches our every life, everyone knows a song or two, or life’s theme song for some. Music has been there since time immemorial, music perhaps can be elevated to the same level with air or food without which man will surely perish.

Can you even imagine life without music, indeed unthinkable and horrific is it? To music, being man’s most loyal companion from the beginning of time, you deserve our sincerest thanks. Perhaps the best things that man could do to show gratitude to music is to continue patronizing music and to create new songs.

And perhaps the most fitting words of gratitude for music could be found at some of the lines of the song “Thank You for the Music” popularized by ABBA.

“Thank you for the music, the song I’m singing. Thanks for all the joy they are bringing. Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty, what would life be, without a song or a dance, what are we? So I say thank you for the music for giving it to me.”
